David and Alice Halkett with their daughter Alice, the youngest of their three children. The photograph is believed to have been taken in the back yard of their house at Dalmeny Rows sometime between 1912 and 1918. In the background can be seen a set of train wagons indicating that the house backed onto the railway therefore would probably have been a two room house. Young Alice (the mother of the owner of the original photograph) is recorded as saying that she had to borrow the teddy bear from a friend as she was too poor to have one of her own. David Halkett (1880-1920) and his wife Alice (nee Davis) (1879-1961) lived in Dalmeny Rows with their three children Jim (born 1903), Tom (born 1905) and Alice (born 1912), together with David’s cousins the Livingstons between 1912 and circa 1918.
