Description
Lease between William D Bell and others as Trustees for the deceased Robert Bell and the Broxburn Oil Company Limited of Shale lying under the lands of Holmes and Goschen. Note on front states: lease terminated Whitsunday 1933. Contract signed at various dates between July 1913 and January 1914. Sewn with pink thread. The lease document includes a map dated 1913 at the scale of roughly 5/16" per chain. The map shows the area around Holmes and has the two areas concerned in the lease highlighted in red, one under the Beugh Burn just to the north of Powflats, the other about 300 yards to the south west of this. Also shown are the main level of No. 3 mine,, the Middletonhall faultline and the area worked by the Holmes Oil Co. Ltd. There are two notes handwritten in pencil by the secretary of Bell's Trustees and dated June 1920, explaining that in the first of these areas, the surface belongs to the trustees and the minerals to the Earl of Buchan and vice-versa in the second. On the reverse of the map, there is a lengthy declaration that this is the map referred to in the contract, witnessed by many hands.
