Description

Bound volume containing handwritten pages which appear to be similar to a diary. Dates on top of entries range from 6th February 1886 to 29th January 1887. Authorship is unknown although the name John Wilson Secretary of Mid and West Lothian Miners Association appears frequently. The entries are either reports of meetings held by Mid and West Lothian Miners Association "The Miners Agitation" or letters to local newspapers outlining grievances of shaleminers of Scotland and some appear to provide some personal views on the management of the Shale Oil mines for the period 1886 to 1887. At the back of the volume are some newspaper cuttings from 1889 related to these meetings. The strike lasted for over 16 weeks and was lead by Mr. John Wilson, miners agent resident in Broxburn. A consequence of the strike was the eviction of miners from their houses.
