Description

a group of miners at an unidentified pitheads in the Tarbrax area. The central figure has a "poorie" cap lamp, but is flanked by two staff with "glenny" safety lamps. Perhaps this signifies that these folk were pit deputies, responsible for ensuring the safe operation of the mine. Miner smoking pipe in the far left of the front row is believed to be William Dyer who originated from Hartill and moved to Australia c. 1885 to work in the Joadja Creek shale mine, before returning to Scotland to continue shale mining.
