LVSAV2014.003-postcard Black and white photographic postcard of the opening of Philpstoun bowling green. The image shows a pipe band playing in The Avenue, Philpstoun with people lining the street ad the edges of the bowling green. The railway line can be seen running along the rear of the bowling green with Binns Tower in the distance. Postmarked Linlithgow, 13th July 1922. (Identical to LVSAV2015.066)

LVSAV2014.046-photograph Black and white group photograph of the West Lothian Education Authority dated October 1926. Donor's grandfather is Robert Harper (1873-1929) and is 2nd from left in the middle row. He was a mining managed at Duddingston 1 & 1 pits and started working at Oakbank. He was injured in an explosion in Duddingston 1 or 2 pits in 1914. He was left deaf, lost one eye and was scarred. He lived for 15 years afterward and died of heart failure after getting the flu.

Donor's grandfather, Robert Harper, (3rd from right, back row), married Catherine Richardson (1877-1934) from Oakbank, a domestic servant. Robert initially lived in Oakbank and was involved in the Local Education Authority. Catherine's father was a pitheadman at Oakbank. Robert worked his way up to mine manager at Duddingston 1 & 2 pits and lived in Newton Village when he married Catherine.

Both men are holding tools, one a set of long handled pincer pliers and the other a metal headed sledgehammer. Photograph appears to have been taken in front of circular, brick tanks. Photograph was donated by Charles Hardie, son of Thomas Millar Hardie and Mary Hardie, the subjects of the photographs and documents in this collection of objects. Thomas Millar Hardie worked at Pumpherston Works from 1939-1941 when he left to join the Royal Navy during WWII. He then returned to work at Pumpherston from 1946 to 1961 when he left due to ill health. He then took the shale oil company to court blaming his work for the company in the paraffin sheds as the cause for his skin complaints and his need to stop working there. A Medical Tribunal was held, but Mr Hardie lost his case.
