DEATHS

BEGBIE- At South Village, Punpherston, on 24th August, 1966, Catherine, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Begbie.

West Lothian Courier, 26 August 1966.

THE LATE MISS BEGBIE

With the passing last Wednesday of Miss Catherine (Kate) Begbie, South Village, the district has lost a fine friend. Miss Begbie died at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs Wm. Begbie. She had been ill for several months. Aged 61 years, Miss Begbie retired in 1960 after a lifetime of service with Scottish Oils Ltd., Middleton Hall, where she was a member of the Drawing Office staff and where she was held in great respect by her colleagues. In social activities she played a prominent part, giving generously of her time and talents. She was a vice-president of the Pumpherston W.R.I. for many years, a prominent member of the Kirk of Calder Woman's Guild, a keen W.V.S. member, and a secretary of the village's women's war work party which performed a host of good deeds during the war. Possibly the village's debt, socially, to Miss Begbie is in respect of her services as lady Cubmaster. When she retired from the office of Scouter in 1947 she had completed 23 years distinguished service with the movement, almost all of which was as lady Cubmaster of the 1st Pumpherston Pack. Under her leadership, 1st Pumpherston became of one of the most prominent Packs in the district. When she resigned her post, many glowing tributes were rightly paid. Born at East Calder, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Begbie, she came with her parents to reside in Pumpherston at a very early age.
