David Smart was a retort foreman at the Linlithgow Oil Company's Champfleurie Oil Works, who perished when fire broke out in the paraffin sheds on the night of the 13th May 1899. Smart was one of six workman injured when a gangway collapsed, and sustained a fractured skull when hit by a falling brick. He died two days later leaving a widow and six children. He was a native of Fife
