Robert Scott Aiton, son of the Minister of Livingston Village, served in the First World War as Acting Major in the Royal Field Artillery and was awarded the Military Cross for Bravery in 1917. He was also Gazetted as a recipient of the French Croix De Guerre in 1918.

Livingston Son of the Manse Receives MC – In the list of War Honours notified last weekend, appeared the name of Lt (Act Captain) R Scott Aiton RFA, eldest son of the Rev Thomas Aiton, Minister of Livingston. The gallant soldier was educated at Stanley House, Bridge of Allan and Aspatria College Cumberland. In civil life, he was sub factor on Major and Lady Clementine Waring’s Estate in Berwickshire. He was prior to the war, Scoutmaster of the Coldstream Boy Scouts and acted as Qtr Master Sgt in the Lothian and Border Horse. When war broke out, he was called up, and served with the Lothian and Border Horse until in January 1915, he received his commission in the RFA. He has been out at the front during the last two years. He has received the Military Cross for distinguished service on the field.
