Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

This view of a large-scale candle factory, perhaps at Addiewell, shows candle moulding machines within a building constructed with cast iron spandrels. Each machine is fed from overhead steam and water pipes and the area is lit by large gas lamps. Standard parallel candles appear to be being manufactured in all machines. Caption reads: 'Candle Moulding on a Large Scale. The melted material is poured into moulds surrounded by hot water. When the moulds are full the hot water is replaced by cold water under the influence of which the candles solidify. They are then pushed up out of the moulds by hollow pistons.'
