Description

B&W negative copied in 1990 from official albums then held at Grangemouth refinery.

Westwood pit was sunk 1915 by the Oakbank oil company to reach reserves of Dunnet shale 700 feet below the surface. There were two brick lined shafts, 16' in diameter. Shale was wound in No.1 (downcast) shaft, No.2 shaft being for ventilation, electric cables and water pipes. This photograph shows an attendant in charge of a group of electrically operated turbine pumps in a brick-lined chamber 700ft below the surface. The capacity of each pump is approx. 500 gallons per minute.
