Competency certificate for mine rescue work from the Central Rescue Station, Heriot-Watt College issued to James Patterson on 7th February 1930.

To certify that James Patterson [sic] (Paterson) of 306 West Street, Broxburn has been trained with breathing apparatus at this Central Rescue Station. He has also received instruction in the following subjects and is qualified to act as a member of a Mine Rescue Brigade:

a) The properties and detection of poisonous or inflammable gases

b) The reading of ventilation plans

c) The use and construction of breathing apparatus

d) The various appliances used in connection with mine rescue and recovery work

e) The rules relating to rescue work

Signed by J Cameron Smail, Principal of Heriot-Watt College, H Briggs, Professor of Mining and D Davidson, Instructor, Central Rescue Station on 7th February 1930. Dates of practice sessions on reverse between 22nd March 1930 and 10th January 1934.

Owned by James Paterson, the donor's grandfather, from Broxburn, who was a Fireman and member of the Mine Rescue Team. He latterly worked at the Roman Camp mines.
