Shale Trail - Union Square to Happy Land
From the Burngrange memorial in Union Square (and also the starting point of the shale trail), it's only a 400 metre walk west along the West Calder's Main Street before turning north into Northfield Terrace and reaching the Happy Land. Things have changed since the heyday of the shale industry. Along your route a few new streets have been created and old ones have disappeared, yet sufficient fine old buildings have survived to retain West Calder's special charm. Alternatively you can turn from Main Street into Society Place, and follow a route past buildings created by the dynamic West Calder Cooperative Society that played such an important role in the development of the village, and other shalefield communities.
