CUTTING DOWN TREES
Alfred Thomas Orr, James and Archibald Orr, 6 Hope St., Philpstoun, and David Reid, 14 Hope St., Philpstoun, appeared on a charge of having, on the 1st November, maliciously cut down a growing elm tree from the South bank of the Union Canal, 150 yards west of Hope St., Philpstoun.
The accused stated that they had no fire and the coals were 5s per cwt. They could not afford that, and went out for wood.
The Sheriff said it would not do if everyone in the country adopted the attitude of the accused. He admonished James and Archibald Orr, and fined Alfred Orr and S. Reid £1 each. Three weeks were given to pay.
