    Digital copy of BBC recording made by donor's grandfather, John Kean Loch, of his experiences working in the shale mines. "Downcast Kettle" recorded circa 1964 at 95 Dundee Street, Edinburgh. Transmitted on BBC Radio, Jameson Clark involved. John Kean Loch was the grandfather of the donor and was born 10/07/1884 in Pumpherston and worked as a shale miner circa 1892 - circa 1922. From circa 1922 to 1930 he worked as a sales rep in Aberdeen for Scottish Oils before moving to 95 Dundee Street, Edinburgh. The recording was digitised by Almond Valley Heritage Trust from cassette tape for the owner who let us keep a copy of the digital recording for our reference collection. The cassette tape was retained by the owner. John Kean Loch was the grandfather of the donor and born on 10/07/1884 in Pumpherston. His birth certificate states his place of birth as Pumpherston Oil Works. His father, John Loch, was a bricklayer at Pumpherston Oil Works until circa 1886. John Kean Loch started work for Scottish Oils Ltd as a miner in circa 1898 until circa 1922. He was active in the trade union movement and continued to work for Scottish Oils Ltd as a sales rep in Aberdeen and moved to Edinburgh in circa 1930. Although he was a cousin of Sir William Fraser, 1st Baron Strathalmond, John Kean Loch chose not to have a relationship with that side of the family. His grand daughter believes that this may have something to do with his active involvement in the trade union.

James Roberst gave Thomas Darling a reference for a job as Forrester with the Earl of Buchan at Almondell and he worked there for 40 years and when he retired they gave him the lodge for free. James Roberts moved to Broxburn Oil Works after Tarbrax shut down and had 2 daughters, Ella and Jean. They stayed at Elms Station Road, Broxburn. Also attached is a photo taken of the power station at Tarbrax.

The three images were taken by David Syme, grandfather of the donor, at the time Deans Works were demolished and show the retort before and during demolition in 1956. The pictures also give an indication of the wider area in the bakcground. David Syme worked in the shale industry and lived most of his adult life at 14 Dean Street, Livingston Station and was a keen amateur photographer.

    Copy image of a sepia photograph of a Scottish Oil and Shell Mex tanker, registration number V7362. Donors father, David Houston, drove a Shell Mex tanker after WW1 until forming his own haulage company in 1922. He purchased and converted old army trucks into tankers for his own haulage company. From 1903-1932, registration plates which began with G, S or V were initially restricted to Scotland and followed the sequence of one or two letter code, followed by a sequence number from 1-9999.
