Description

Glass plate negative of technical drawings of a retort bench, scale 3/8" to 1 foot.

Left hand side: section through a coal retort, right hand side: section through a shale retort, circa 1890. The shale retort illustrated in the plan appears to be a fairly standard Young & Beilby retort, patented in 1882. The coal retort has a greater volume and lacks the iron lining found in the upper half of the shale retort. Although not identified, this might represent the "Stanrigg" type retort used in Lanarkshire Renfrewshire to retort coal shales. These operations ceased by 1895. Box labelled "Young & Beilby Retorts, Young & Fyfe Retorts"

One of a series of lantern slides / glass plate negatives, thought to be used by Scottish Oils Ltd for instructional lectures
