GOLDEN WEDDINGS

GOLDEN WEDDING

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Lawrence Barclay, 6 Abercorn Place, who have celebrated their golden wedding. Both are ‘Lithers folks born and bred, and it was in the county town that they were married.  Mrs Barclay (maiden name, Margaret Ainslie) was a member of a well-known Linlithgow family. The couple are as ardent Linlithgow supporters to-day as ever.  Mr Barclay was in his earlier days a shale miner and worked at the Champfleurie Oilworks and Mines when they were in operation. When they closed down he obtained a job at Duddingston No. 1 Mine, and it may amaze the younger generation of shale miners to know that he walked from his home at Linlithgow to Duddingston, a distance of at least seven miles, to work. and for a 6 a.m. start at that! Eventually he moved with his wife and family to Winchburgh, where most of their life has been spent. Mr Barclay sustained a serious accident while at work in Duddingston Mine many years ago and was never able to return to the mines. When he was able to resume work he obtained the job of night watchman at Niddry Castle Works, in which capacity he was well-known to everybody in the village.  He has now been retired for some years, and both he and Mrs Barclay do not at the moment enjoy the best of health.  Here’s wishing them a speedy return to full vigor and many more years of happiness together. There are three sons of the marriage and two grandchildren.

OBITUARY

The funeral of Mrs Lawrence Barclay, 6 Abercorn Place, took place to her native Linlithgow last Saturday. Mrs Barclay came to Winchburgh with her husband and family from Linlithgow nearly 50 years’ ago and was one of our best known residenters. She has a ready sense of humour and a kindliness of heart which made her a good neighbour and friend. Latterly, she did not enjoy the best of health, and, some time ago, underwent an operation for the amputation of a leg. Despite that, she retained her cheerfulness to the last. She is survived by her husband and three sons, to whom all sympathy has been extended.

OBITUARY

By the death of Mr Lawrence Barclay, Abercon Place, last Friday the village lost one of its oldest and most respected citizens. A native of Linlithgow, Mr Barclay had been resident in Winchburgh for over 50 years. A shale mine to trade, he used to recall that when he first secured employment in Winchburgh area at No. 1 Mine. Duddingston, he walked for several years from Linlithgow to Duddingston to work, a distance of fully seven miles. It meant a 4 a.m. start. Fully 30 years ago Mr Barclay sustained a serious accident at Duddingston which left him badly crippled. After a long convalescence he resumed work as a watchman at Niddry Castle Oilworks. As such he became a well-known figure in the village, especially to mischievous boys who he chased with unabating energy. His bark was worse than his bite, however, and everybody, even the boys, respected “Lowrie.” In his younger days at Linlithgow, he had been a more than useful footballer and kept his interest in the game until the end, being one of the keenest supporters of the local Albion F.C. The funeral took place to Linlithgow Cemetery on Monday, when the burial service was conducted by the Rev. G.A. Young, M.A. Predeceased by his wife two years ago, Mr Barclay is survived by three sons.
