WELL KNOWN FIGURE PASSES

One of the best known and most highly esteemed villagers, Mr Peter Shearer, passed away in Bangour Hospital on Thursday last after a few weeks illness. Mr Shearer, who was 67 years of age and who lived at 77 Wyndford Avenue, was until his retirement through ill-health a couple of years ago, employed as a miner with Scottish Oils, having worked in the shalemines for half a century. He took an active interest in the affairs of the village and for 30 years he acted on the branch committee of the West Calder Co-operative Society, and over a long period he held the joint offices of secretary and treasurer to the Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds, Heatherbell Lodge, No. 2116. Mr Shearer also acted in a similar capacity for the local Old People's Welfare Committee, and in all his work he proved a capable and kindly official. He was also a member of the committee of the Yearly Society in which he took a great interest. Through his engaging personality he earned for himself the esteem of all classes of the community. He is survived by his wife and family of a son and daughter.
