Harrod's 1870 trade directory record that Thomas and William Adams operated paraffin oil works at Newfields and Greenfield. The first edition OS map shows two oil works, immediately north of Burslem, on either side of the Newlands branch of the North Staffordshire Railway. It is suggested that the works shown in the centre of the map below is Greenfield Oil Work, as Greenfield Pottery lay about 300m to the south east of the oil works.
