Harrod's 1870 trade directory records that Thomas and William Adams operated paraffin oil works at Newfields and Greenfield. The first edition OS map shows two oil works, immediately north of Burslem, on either side of the Newfields branch of the North Staffordshire Railway. It is suggested that the works shown in the centre of the map below is Newfields Oil Work.

Mapped by the Ordnance Survey of c.1876, showing a long structure (presumably a bench of retorts) labelled "oil works".

Number of retorts: not known.
