Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Company Limited, William Walker Brotherton. Correspondence and agreement re arrangement re Ground taken for Alderstone Railway. The five letters cover the company's dealings with William Walker of Brotherton, West Calder and his claims for compensation for ground occupied by the railway and a level crossing, for loss of water and grass and for the disturbance of stock by carting and trespass. In a letter dated 27th March 1909, the company offers him £5/7/6 in compensation. In his reply dated 6th April 1909, Walker asks that a stile be constructed at the level crossing, that the gates there should be kept in order and that he be compensated for flooding caused by the railway embankment impeding the flow of water from his land. The next letters dated 8th and 13th April are from Thomas Punlice{?} to John Fyfe, the managing director, about his negotiations with Walker, indicating that a stile and land drains should be constructed. Copies of letters to the North British Railway Company from John Fyfe of Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Company Limited to the Locomotive Superintendent at Cowlairs. The first letter, dated 10th March 1909 requests walking passes to enable four named employees from Young's plants at Addiewell and Uphall to attend to tank wagons detained at Bathgate by the railway company. A signed indemnity undertaking accompanies this letter. Minute of Agreement between Archibald Gibson McLagan Esquire of Pumpherston and Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Company Limited regarding wayleave payment on account of shale and other minerals transported across the lands of the first party. The handwritten minute, dated 30th December 1908 and 6th January 1909, is stitched with blue tape, and concerns the carriage of shale and minerals across the Pumpherstone estate via the Uphall and Hopetoun Railway. Attached are some typewritten letters concerning later developments. The earliest of these, dated 17th August 1920 is from Thomas & McLeish to Young's commercial manager and concerns the planned construction of a connection between the Uphall and Hopetoun Railway and Young's Middleton Hall works. A reply to this letter from Youngs', dated 24th August 1920 accepts these terms. Dated 19th August and 23rd November 1908, the document is handwriten and bound with pink thread. Two maps are provided, both dated 10th July 1908. The first is titled "Plan No 1 showing position of level crossing on Greendykes Road" at a scale of roughly 2 7/8 inches to 500 feet. Greendykes Road and the proposed placement of the railway line and level crossing are in red. The second map is titled "Plan No 2 showing alteration of corner of Greendykes Road" and is at a scale of roughly 5 3/4 inches to 600 feet. The document is handwritten and bound with pink thread. Dated 27th November 1908, the document appoints Stevenson John Charles George Macadam, Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry, Fellow of Chemical Society as sole Arbiter or Inspector of the discharges from the Paraffin Oil Works at Addiewell, replacing Professor Alexander Crum Brown of the University of Edinburgh in this role. A typed card attached to the agreement states that it was noted at Addiewell on 1st December 1908. Handwritten document bond with silk thread and dated 30th September and 7th October 1908, the item includes three maps, one for each crossing. The first is titled "Wilsontown Road Crossing" and is at a scale of roughly 2 7/8 inches to 600 feet. In all three maps, roads are picked out in yellow, the Longhill Burn in blue. and the centre line of the railway in red. The first map has a second railway line marked in blue, showing the site of an existing level crossing in the area. The second is titled "Bellsquarry Road Crossing" at a scale of 3 7/8 inches to 800 feet. Agreement with Peter Smith for ground taken from West Mains Farm, West Calder. Consists of a typed letter from Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Company Limited, dated 31st August 1909, setting forth the terms of an agreement made by J. Inglis Davidson with Peter Smith. Smith is to receive the sum of £71/4/8 in payment for ground taken and damage done up to Martinmas 1908 and an annual payment of £40 thereafter, in return for which Smith will withdraw any claim for smoke damage in respect of the permanent pit chimney on the farm. Dated 27th March 1935, the agreement concerns the construction of a new level crossing close to that already existing on the Wilsontown Road. A plan accompanies the document, the road picked out in yellow, the West Calder Burn and the existing line in blue and the new line and level crossing in red.
