A firm established by Ernest and Wilfred Smith, partners in the firm of Richard Smith, manufacturing chemist, along with Ido Jan Reinhart Muurling, who married Winifred Smith in Helensburgh in 1874. The firm of Smith Brothers & Muurling was dissolved in 1889, and the business was carried forward by the firm of Richard Smith at their Glasgow premises.

Glasgow Post Office directories do not list the firm of Smith Brothers & Muurling, but include an entry for Ernest Smith, manufacturing chemist, based at 182 West St. Tradeston, resident at Culrain, Bothwell.

Ido Jan Reinhart Muurling (1848-1926) was born in Groningen, Netherlands, petitioned for naturalisation as a US citizen in 1901, and became head of the Beyer Chemical Company in the USA.

    • The Subscribing Trustees of RICHARD SMITH, Manufacturing Chemist, Glasgow, have, by arrangement, taken over from 31st May 1889, the Copartnery Business for the distillation of coal and the trade in connection therewith, hitherto carried on at Ayr Road Hamilton, by the other subscribers under the firm of Smith Brothers Muurling. The business will be carried on by Trustees in connection with their Chemical Works at West Street Glasgow and in Paisley. The firm of Smith Brothers and Muurling has accordingly been DISSOLVED as on 31st May, 1889. All debts due to and by the firm will be received or paid by the trustees at 182 West Street, Glasgow
