Westrigg No.1 pit

A pit located in mossy wetlands, south of the site of Westrigg No.2 & 3 pit, which is marked on the 1895 OS map as "old pit", with a "dismantled tramway linking the site to the Bathgate to Airdrie. It is presumed to be Westrigg No.1 pit. The pit site can be made out on aerial photographs, but little trace is visible on the ground.

The 1883 List of Mines records Westrigg pit, owned by George Moir, manager Jas. Simpson, working the Balbardie coal by the longwall method, employing 4 on the surface and 6 underground. The downcast shaft was 7' x 7' and 48 ft deep, the upcast was 3.5' and 48 feet deep. It was a non-fiery mine with natural ventilation
